About me

The devil makes work for idle hands, so they say, well luckily my hands haven’t stopped moving since I was a toddler! I’m a ridiculous fidgeter and have always had a creative mind and outlook so this has translated into me constantly looking for new and interesting ways to keep them busy!

I started drawing at a very young age and as an adult got my honors degree in Fine Art. I studied it for five years, one in my hometown, Westport, county Mayo, Ireland and four years in county Sligo, Ireland. As a kid, I remember my mam drawing cartoon characters off the tele for us (hey Arnold to be exact!) I thought it was so cool, and so instead of colouring in my colouring books I would try and duplicate the images myself.

My mam was a chef when I was small and I remember she used to bake a lot at home, lots of sponge cakes, madeira cakes, fairy buns, apple pies. I always wanted to know exactly what was happening and was dying to help out and she always let me. I would have tried to do it all on my own if I was allowed, I’m sure I pushed to! She would let me mix the batter, knead the dough, “once you can make the number eight it’s ready”, I honestly remember that like it was yesterday, even the smells.

I definitely have my mother to thank for feeding my creative curiosity and enabling it from a young age. That said, I most certainly did not get her patience and my stubbornness, competitiveness and need to perfect everything, that’s all from my father!

I’ve always loved savoury food and growing up it was definitely a firm favourite of mine. I would skip dessert for an extra portion of the main and had no sweet tooth per se, I never cared to indulge, even as a kid. Roll on adulthood and as each year goes by my sweet tooth calls to me louder and louder! I feel like savoury food has always given me the gift of speed and convenience, I could always find ways to perfect my recipes without much waiting about or precision being detrimental to the outcome. Baking and treats, not so much! Feeling pretty confident in my savoury cooking abilities (all of which I will happily be sharing with you too) this looming sweet tooth of mine and my need to perfect this style of cooking (and find patience along the way, possibly!) has me hooked primarily at the minute so this blog will be dominated (for now) to my quest to be the perfect baker!

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or comments or if you have any recipes you’d like to see or for me to tackle or put a spin on for you. I am by no means a professional but I am passionate about food and perfecting my trade and if this blog can bring one person the pure joy I get from these recipes then I’m happy out!
